Hey Substackers, how's it hangin'? Apologies to the five people who enjoy these posts for not publishing anything for many weeks. I was busy livin' and to be fair, too lazy to put finger to keyboard outside of blogging over at my website. At any rate, this has been a long time coming, since it’s a review of two culinary highlights that can be found in one hotel—namely, the Pullman in Silom. On the ground floor, they’ve got a burger joint called 25 Degrees, and also a rooftop wine bar called Scarlett. Not surprisingly, I love both. In the case of 25D, though, their burgers aren’t my favorite thing on the menu. That award goes to their breakfast. Back in May when my brother was visiting, we went there for pancakes, American breakkie, and chicken and waffles. Here’s the breakdown…
First, the American Breakfast: two eggs any way, pork sausage, thick-cut bacon, sourdough toast, and (the following crazy items) pickles, tomato salsa, and potato wedges which I subbed for hash browns. Except for the pickle, which I couldn’t reconcile, the plate was utterly delightful. I inhaled it like I was starving. Everything was expertly-cooked and top quality. The pancakes, with powdered sugar, maple syrup, and a side of fruit, paled in comparison to a traditional American breakfast, but if you have a craving for pancakes, it’ll meet your yearn sufficiently. The highlight, though, was the chicken and waffles. It was an enigmatic meal: two fresh waffles plus two crisp, boneless chicken breasts, a dollop of sour cream, butter, and syrup. As an L.A. native, raised on Roscoe’s chicken and waffles, the 25D version wasn’t quite what I’m used to, but it was a filling, fully-satisfying platter of food. Their unique take on this Southern staple is as enjoyable as it is adventurous.
The highlight of the breakkie, though, was the incredible bloody mary 25D served up. Not only was it an elixir of pure BM perfection, it came with a list of beverage accoutrements that were positively dizzying. First, a half of a hard-boiled egg. Then, a strip of bacon, gorgonzola-stuffed green olives, and jalapenos. This jamming juggernaut was an absolute sensation. Every sip was more mesmerizing than the last. My mouth unabashedly partied as a participant of this piquant pleasure.
Later in the week, I took my bro to Scarlett for their happy hour wine, cheese, and meat special. I didn’t save the receipt, but I think it was 999b for five cheeses and five meats. The cheeses: Tomme de Savoie, Mortadella Truffle, Valencay chevre, Roquefort, and Toiture. The meats: I forgot, but we definitely had some parma ham, some black forest ham, some coppa, and some salami. We also got some olive tapenade, which was excellent.
We paired it all with the house white and red—a chard and a cab, both from Chile.
Then we headed out to the balcony to smoke a couple Cubans and watch the sun go down. The view is almost as awesome as the food.
I’m so thankful that Silom seems an out-of-the-way location for tourists in BKK. It means joints like the Pullman and their restaurants never get overly-crowded. They’re a well-kept secret, and if you read my shit, you’re now in on it. Get busy livin’ friends.
